Dr Kirsty Sword Gusmao’s life has been marked by the most astonishing, cinematic twists and turns. From a quiet childhood in regional Victoria to clandestine work smuggling East Timorese men to safety, from falling in love with an imprisoned resistance fighter to First Lady of Timor-Leste.
In 2015 Kirsty Sword Gusmão AO was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia for her distinguished service to Australia-East Timor relations through the development of mutual co-operation and understanding.
Living between Melbourne and Timor-Leste, Dr Kirsty Sword Gusmao AO is the founder of the Alola Foundation and the Chair of the Xanana Gusmao Reading Room which she established in 2000.

  • Lunch will be followed by our guest speaker, William Kininmoth, on the topic:

    The truth and the myths of climate change science

    William Kininmoth holds a Bachelor of Science (University of Western Australia); Master of Science (Colorado State University, USA); and Master of Administration (Monash University). William joined the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) as a cadet meteorologist in 1960. He completed the Meteorologist-in-Training course and was posted to Darwin in 1964, where he

    carried out weather forecasting and specialised in marine and agricultural studies. In 1968 he took up a postgraduate scholarship at Colorado State University, USA.

    On return, William began working at the recently established Australian Numerical Meteorology Research Centre, Melbourne. In 1977 he participated in the inaugural Public Service Executive Development Scheme in Canberra then, returning to Melbourne, he headed BOM’s Special Studies Section. From 1982 to 1985 he was Project Manager for a team of 20 specialists assisting the Meteorology and Environment Protection Administration of Saudi Arabia. He then headed the National Climate Centre until his retirement in 1998.

    Internationally, William provided consultation services to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) until 2007.

    From 1982 through 1998, he was Australia’s representative to the WMO Commission for Climatology, serving two four-year terms on the Board of Management. In 1990 he was a member of the Australian Ministerial Delegation to the Second World Climate Conference. During 1991and 1992 William was a member of the Australian delegation to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change.

    William Kininmonth is the author of Climate Change: A Natural Hazard published in 2004.
